Inductors are a very small component in an electric system, but they play a vital role in protecting electrical parts from sudden and often frequent changes in the current. Depending on the specifics of the system as well as the equipment, system, or device, an inductor may also be called a choke or a coil.

The operation of an inductor is simple to understand, even for those not well-versed in electrical processes. This small device is passive, in that it does not alter the current flowing through the system when it is in the normal current range. In the event of a spike or a sudden or ongoing surge in the current, the coils of the inductor create an electromagnetic field that stores this burst of energy. As the surge ends, the built up energy in the electromagnetic field is then released into the circuit within the pre-set range.

The other option to consider is a custom inductor. This is an inductor that is designed specifically for a specific application. The choice to use a custom inductor allows the OEM to control for the inductance the component provides, which is the ratio of the incoming voltage to the change in the current. This is designed to address the surges or changes in the current that may flow through the inductor.

There are several different options to consider in a custom inductor. This includes the type of inductor, the core material, the shape as well as the overall design of the component.

Generally, the customer or standard inductors are long duty cycle components, and rarely need to be changed when selected correctly for the specific application parameters.
