Las Vegas is known to millions as the ‘gambling capital of the world’ and is the internationally recognized resort city of hotels, casinos and restaurants. Set in Clark County, Nevada, Las Vegas is also known for the shopping facilities, nightlife and all forms of entertainment. After being established in 1905, Vegas was incorporated as a city, six years later in 1911 and became the most popular US city by the end of the twentieth century.
Las Vegas was still a part of Mexico in 1844, but by May of 1855 it had been annexed by the United States. Following that, it was slowly colonized by the Mormons, led by Brigham Young who assigned a group of thirty missionaries to convert the locals to their own faith. This created the ‘Mormon corridor’ which lay between there and Salt Lake City. Two years later, during the ‘Utah War’ the Mormons left Las Vegas and it was then established as a railroad town. Once it became incorporated, Vegas’s history moved into the twentieth century and was redeveloped during the 1980’s and 1990’s. The Mirage—Vegas’s first resort and casino—opened in 1989, with 3,044 hotel rooms and every gambling facility one could imagine.

Since the redevelopment, city officials try constantly to keep the population diversified and therefore keep the economy diverse. The banking industry, light manufacturing and many other commercial operations now have their headquarters in Las Vegas in order to keep jobs on a more diverse level too.
