While water is essential for life on our planet, it’s also one of our resources most subject to contamination and is responsible for a huge number of deaths globally (caused by waterborne diseases). Water treatment is an essential part of the delivery of clean, disease free drinking water for domestic and commercial premises. Despite some very modern techniques, one simple technique, the use of a water filter media, is based on natural filtration processes.
Filter media systems
A water filter media system is one in which a bed of sand, or other fine material, is employed to purify water from contaminants and organic matter. Crushed granite, or commercially produced materials ground to high specifications, can also be employed. As water passes through the filter, the contaminants are removed and held with the bed of material. This is similar to the way in which natural filtration occurs as water passes through the ground or rock. The process is widely used in domestic and commercial settings both by public and private water treatment companies.
The process
Water enters the filter media system at the top and passes through a first, fine, layer of material. Normally, layers are created in coarser sections with a layer of gravel at the bottom. In many city facilities, rapid sand filters are used to clean sewage and process it to create clean water. The process normally involves the use of chemical substances that help to suspend contaminants in the water and these are then captured by the media filter allowing the purified water to continue through the system until fully cleaned.
Suitability and size
For small scale, domestic filtration systems, media filters are becoming increasingly common as they are seen as a simple, reliable and green alternative to re-cycling waste water. This type of system is also suitable in many commercial settings and can be used to remove contaminants in waste water, cleaning it effectively and allowing for disposal back into the environment. Given the increasing concerns relating to pollution, contamination and damage to the environment from industry, effective waste water management is an increasing priority for many firms. Systems can be small or large depending on the requirements and the space available, while water media filter products are widely available from suppliers of water treatment products across the US and the world.
