Buying accurate weight scales needn’t be a headache for your business, as long as you buy the right scales for the job. The wrong choice can be a headache (and a costly one to resolve) but accurate weight scales are essential in a huge range of industries. For that reason there’s a huge choice when it comes to buying scales. Here are a few choices to weigh up (forgive the pun) when making the decision.

Over-capacity

The capacity of the scales will be a significant factor and of course this will depend on what industry you work in. From grocery stores to food production units or heavy industries, different capacities of scales will be available. Standard issue scales for industrial use range from 800lbs to about 10,000lbs but even higher capacities are available. The most important thing to consider is to plan on buying a slightly higher capacity than you’ll generally need – most experts recommend 20-50 per cent above your standard needs. This has two advantages – it can save money on new scales if your business needs to change but it also minimizes the risk of damage from overloading the scales due to human or computer error.

Size matters

Whatever your industry, the size and shape of the scales will be an important factor to consider. If the perfect scales turn out to be far from the perfect fit for your premises, the chances as are that it won’t matter how accurate they are, they’ll be of little use. In some industries, the nature of the process you’re involved in will also dictate the shape; if you regularly pack, or process, non-standard items then you may find that basic square or rectangular scales may not be suitable. Bespoke solutions or specialist weighing scales are available for specific industries.

Scale suppliers and maintenance

Suppliers range from specialists within one sector to those which offer a full range of scales (along with calibration and maintenance services). A supplier with a good reputation in your industry sector is a good starting point, but those with wide experience of different industries can also be a good firm to partner with as their experience is likely to be useful when it comes to assisting you in choosing the right scales for your needs.
