Volkswagen has been responsible for introducing several affordable vehicles in North America. The Bug is a classic example of how they changed how the American public viewed cars. The Golf is another example where Volkswagen tapped into the entry-level buyers’ market. In 1980/1981, to further increase their market share, they released into the North American market, the Volkswagen Jetta, for sale.

The Generations

Designed by Girogetto Giugiaro, the Jetta began to make its presence felt in cities as large as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and as small as Buford Wyoming. A compact car, it has altered little for the first incarnations. Available as both sedans and wagons, the second generation made is American appearance in 1985. It became a long-running and perennial favorite. In fact, it was the company’s best seller.

It was in the third and fourth generations that major changes became apparent. The Volkswagen Jetta for sale during this period – 1993 – 2005, had four doors and more powerful engines. The company also introduced an “A” platform of this type.

For the fifth-generation debuting in 2005, the interior underwent a major remodeling, as did the body and even the electrical system. The 6thgeneration did not appear until 2011 but remained as the latest incarnation until 2018 when Volkswagen replaced it with the seventh generation version. This one had a greater appeal to people’s sensibilities. With class and tasteful style, it was only topped by the latest version, the 2019 seventh generation.
