What is two-phase treatment?

These days, most authorities recommend that a child have their first visit with an orthodontist in Deerfield by the time they are seven years old. By that age, the child’s adult teeth will have started to emerge, and the orthodontist will be able to spot developing problems such as crowding.

A child’s jaw is far more malleable than that of an adult or older teenager, and the orthodontist will take advantage of that fact to use different appliances and treatments to correct problems that could require surgery in an adult patient.

The two-phase treatment is what it sounds like. During the first phase, the orthodontist will correct problems like an underbite or crowding when the patient is between seven and eleven years old. The first phase is followed by a resting period during which the orthodontist waits for the patient’s adult teeth – except for the wisdom teeth – to completely emerge.

During the second phase, the orthodontist will straighten the patient’s teeth. The second phase usually involves braces, and the patient is typically between 11 and 13 years old.

What is AcceleDent?

AcceleDent is a device used in conjunction with braces or Invisalign to speed up the movement of the teeth. It looks like a mouthguard attached to a handheld device, and it creates vibrations that can accelerate tooth movement by as much as 50 percent. The patient needs to use it for only 20 minutes every day.
