A good working light is strong, dependable, and serves a number of purposes. You’ll need a light to work by in emergency situations, so buy something with battery power in case there’s no electricity available. What features and designs should you look for in a quality-made rechargeable work light? Here are some shopping tips to consider.

Lighting Power Source

You have three basic choices when you check out battery-powered lights. You can choose a conventional incandescent model. However, fluorescent and LED lights are also available. Let’s check out all three selections:

 * Incandescent – years ago, this was the best choice. However, thanks to modern technology, fluorescent and LED are better choices. Incandescent bulbs are inefficient and use too much battery power. They also generate heat.

 * Fluorescent – a step up from old-fashioned incandescent lights, because they’re more efficient.

 * LED – the most efficient and easy to use rechargeable work light has LED power. Batteries last longer. LED doesn’t put out heat, and you get a brighter and more powerful light for the same power.

Batteries

You can choose from NiCad, Li-ion, and Lithium polymer batteries. All three selections work well, so choose a battery pack that gives you at least a 5-hour charge. If you plan to use your rechargeable work light a lot, consider models with two battery packs. This gives you a constant source of light.

Hooks

It’s important to have a light with a strong and sturdy hook. Choose a model that’s made with steel hooks. Plastic hooks may work fine for a little while, but they might crack or break with frequent use.

Price

You may be drawn to the lower priced lights, but this is usually a mistake. Quality lighting costs more than cheap lighting, but you get much more in return. The best lights are not cheap, but they are affordable.
