So, you finally closed on that fixer-upper. You’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work turning your new property into the home of your dreams! But, not so fast! Did you know that many home improvement jobs can either benefit from, or require the use of men’s protective work jumpsuits? From mold, to lead dust to asbestos, a variety of materials in your home can be hazardous to your health if you do not take the proper precautions.

Mold

Mold is one of the most common hidden dangers when it comes to home renovation. Particularly in damper climates. Mold may also be a concern if there is evidence of roof or plumbing leaks, or if you have warped or cracked walls. Mold can be found within walls, under flooring, or behind bathroom tubs, showers, and vanities.

Lead Dust

If your home was built prior to the 1970’s, there is a good chance that the walls were, at one point, coated in lead paint. While simply painting over an old coat shouldn’t be a problem, caution is advised if you are demoing, drilling, or tearing any sort of fixture out of the walls or ceiling. Lead testing is usually available during or after the purchase of a home, but at an additional cost. If you opt to forgo the lead inspection, just make sure you take the proper precautions when working on your project.

Asbestos

Homes built before 1980 may contain asbestos in roof shingles, ceiling tiles, siding, and insulation. Some of the health risks associated with asbestos include cancer, asbestosis, and fibrosis.

To protect yourself during home renovation, it is important to seal off the area you are working in. Extra care must be taken for anyone involved in the home remodel. Wearing a protective jumpsuit, gloves, eye ware, and masks will help reduce your risk as you undertake your renovation project.
