Having an aging parent means you need to be realistic. You have to be able to understand when it is time to let someone else help you and your family take care of him or her. You must come to the realization that, no matter how much you love them or want to care for them, it may not be enough. Over time, you may become resentful, self-doubtful and exhausted. Your responsibilities as a parent and spouse may even suffer. Your fellow co-workers or employees may notice the changes in your energy and productivity.  Before this occurs, do the right thing – hire an in home caregiver for your parent.

Basic Approach

Before you make the move, do your research. Contact local organizations and talk to senior centers. They can provide you with a list of agencies and individuals they rely on. However, it will be up to you to carefully go through and vet the people and groups involved. You need to look at:

  • Reputation: What do others think of the organization or individual? Have there been any complaints or allegations against them?
  • Credentials and Education: Do they have the right education and credentials to perform their duties? Does the company perform background checks?
  • Compatibility: Does the company share the same views of care as you do? Does the in home caregiver have the right approach and philosophy to work with you and your aged parent?
  • Insurance: Is the appropriate insurance in place?
  • Engagement: How engaged is the agency and its workers? What are their expectations going forward? How much input do they allow from you and your parent?

Hiring an In Home Caregiver

When searching for the right agency or individual to take care of your parent, always spend time gathering pertinent data. Admittedly, your budget will play a major role. However, never focus on this element to the detriment of all others when it comes to finding the right in home caregiver.
