Staten Island occupies 100 sq. miles and Manhattan occupies 38 sq. miles. Most of the property on Staten Island is residential property although there are a few very nice areas of shopping and dining. Navigating Staten Island is relatively easy considering the highways that run through the island and the bridges that connect to New York City. However, the Staten Island Ferry is a lovely ride that enables you to enjoy the city views and to enjoy an easy and comfortable ride to the center of Manhattan.
Staten Island has some colonial history and some history that has traveled with the Island through time to make it an interesting place to visit. Marvelous colonial homes and some with majestic architecture dot the island. Of course, the view of the New York skyline can be breathtaking. Even though Staten Island is separated from New York’s Manhattan it is one of five boroughs that makeup New York City along with Manhattan.
Staten Island was not really devastated by Sandy except for the beach area and the part that is back away from the ocean a little. This area still looks like a war zone, but people are working feverishly to bring it back. Many beautiful homes were destroyed and some were blown so far away that they have never been found.
The Staten Island land fill was closed some time before 9/11, but it was reopened to receive the ruins of the area devastated by 9/11. The area is well protected and treated so it is not a hazard. The unidentified dead from 9/11 who are buried with the rest of the 9/11 structural remains are honored every year.
There are not a lot of Rental Property in Staten Island considering the need after houses were destroyed in the area and other parts of the New York City area. However, the apartments that are for rent seem to be far less expensive than other rentals in New York City. Many of the rental apartments are older as are the houses. Many have been well cared for and appear to be nice places to rent.
Like anything else, it pays to find a rental agent who knows the Rental Property in Staten Island and can help guide you through the neighborhoods and the various properties that are for rent. A good agent knows the building and the neighborhood which will be very helpful to the potential renter.
