It used to be that a car came with a key, it was inserted into the ignition and the car started. Today, transponder key blanks are used to send a radio signal from the key, which is actually a transmitting device to the receiver which is an integral part of the vehicles ignition system. Although transponder keys are predominately used for vehicles, they can be and are used for gate openers and various keyless entry systems. Every key has an imbedded program that will allow it to start only one vehicle, this dramatically reduces the possibility of car theft.
Transponder key blanks were first seen in vehicles in the mid 1990s, the basic technology is an imbedded microchip in the plastic component of the key. Every chip is programmed with a unique code or serial number, this code is set when the key is first programmed in the factory. The owner of the vehicle can send a signal from the transmitter when he or she wishes to start or lock their car. The chip asks for validation of the code and if it gets it, then the engine immobilizes are deactivated. If the receiver does not respect the code, then the car will not start and it will remain locked and totally immobilized. The key itself may be able to turn the engine over but it will not start due to the lack of a handshake.
Insurance companies as well as vehicle manufacturers consider cars that are fitted with a transponder system to be theft-proof and many insurance companies offer reduced premiums for owners of cars so fitted. Although the car may be “virtually” theft-proof, nothing really is, thieves have developed sophisticated ways to get around the system and, they can simply tow the car off if they want it badly.
Replacement transponder keys are quite expensive so having a spare is a good idea. If an original transponder key is lost a duplicate can be made by some locksmiths, but not all, as well as the dealer. It may be possible for drivers to program their own transponder key blanks but every vehicle make and model demands a slightly different process. It is recommended however to use a professional to program the blank and of course, always have a spare available.
