While most cosmetic surgery is elective and not done for medical reasons, the option to perform a specific procedure on a patient is always up to the cosmetic surgeon. Most people in the Austin area are good candidates for surgery, but it is not the right choice for everyone.

In your first meeting with the cosmetic surgeon, he or she spends time getting to understand your reasons for having the surgery. The doctor also evaluates the type of surgery you are considering and if it is possible and safe to do. There are some situations where plastic surgery may not be the right procedure for the patients, or when the timing of the surgery may have to be adjusted.

Clear Idea of Results

Men and women who have a clear idea of a realistic change they want to make in a part of their body or their face are usually good candidates for cosmetic surgery. People who are not sure why they want the surgery or specifically what they want to be done are not good candidates for a procedure.

Health Issues

As with any type of elective surgery, the individual must be in good health. Patients that are currently on specific medications, recovering from health conditions, or who have chronic health issues may not be acceptable candidates due to the risk of the procedure.

Women who are pregnant or people on specific types of medications may not be good candidates for surgical procedures at this time, but they may be good candidates at a later point.

Understanding of Recovery Time

Some cosmetic surgery has a very short recovery time window, which may be just a few days. Other procedures, such as eye surgery, nose surgery or facelifts may have a longer recovery period.

The doctor always ensures the patient understands the recovery period and can take time off work to heal. In the event this is not possible, the doctor and patient can look at a better scheduling option and then plan the procedure.
