Going to an immediate or urgent care clinic is a very good option for situations where your primary care physician is not available and the issue or injury is not life-threatening.

The benefits to using an immediate care clinic include the ability to get in and out of the clinic quickly without the wait associated with the emergency room (ER). Additionally, by using the urgent care facility you can free up the emergency room staff to deal with life and death emergencies while still getting the best possible care.

Most people will use immediate care clinic services for four general reasons or health issues. However, they are available for a full range of non life-threatening medical services.

Musculoskeletal Issues

Sprains, strains, twists and possible fractures are all good candidates for treatment at an urgent care clinic. These clinics can provide imaging services and confirm if there is a fracture, resulting in treatment and the use of a splint or cast. Sprains and strains can also be diagnosed and treated.

If there is an injury to the skin or if the bone protrudes through the skin, it is important to go to an ER center. Often surgery is required for these types of injuries that cannot be provided through the urgent care clinic.

Wounds

Minor wounds such as burns, cuts, abrasions or other types of minor damage to the skin can be treated at the immediate care clinic. Again, if there is significant blood loss or major areas of the body affected by the injury, the ER is the better option.

Infections

Any types of infections from skin rashes to urinary tract infections, ear infections or infections of the skin can be treated at the clinic. Ideally, early treatment will result in fewer problems and a shorter healing period, so don’t wait to book an appointment days in the future with your doctor.

Finally, symptoms of a cold or flu can easily be treated at these clinics. Early treatment can lessen the symptoms you have to deal with and also prevent spreading germs to your friends, family and co-workers.
