Contact The Virtual NephrologistIt’s important to know what the common symptoms of high blood pressure are, as it is something that many people suffer from. Also called hypertension, it affects about a third of all adults in the United States alone.

Actually, high blood pressure sometimes comes without any symptoms at all. It is referred to as a silent disease because many people don’t realize they have it until it is tested. In other cases, it isn’t discovered until the person suffers from a heart attack, stroke or other disease.

When there are signs present, the most common symptoms of high blood pressure include headaches, dizziness, nose bleeds, blurry vision, palpitations ringing in the ears, or tinnitus. Some people may get hot while sleeping, giving them a type of insomnia. Others complain of excessive sweating, frequent urination or muscle cramps. Fatigue is another typical complaint.

Considering that all of these common symptoms of high blood pressure can be indicative of something other than hypertension, experiencing them is not enough to be able to make a diagnosis. It is essential that the blood pressure is checked.

The first time you are found to have high blood pressure, if it is not excessively high, your doctor may decide that it just needs monitoring. If it is moderately high, you may need to have it checked for the next three weeks or so in a row to see if it persists. Although those people with excessively high blood pressure may need to get treatment right away, life style changes may be sufficient for others. This will often take the form of exercise, dietary changes and stress management.

There are some people that are more at risk of hypertension than others, making it especially important that they know the common symptoms of high blood pressure, and that they monitor regularly. Among the risk factors include age, family history, obesity, smoking and stress.
