Dogs are naturally curious and are drawn to investigate new smells.  Sometimes they listen to their nose more than their owners.  This is a habit that can be modified through training; however, in the meantime, thought and planning should go into where and when you walk your dog.  It would be a scary thing if your dog were to follow his nose at night and get away from you.  Here are five reasons lighted dog collars are a smart way to keep your dog safe.

1. Aside from your dog having a mind of his own, traffic is a hazard that is out of your control.  While you can’t be sure a driver is paying attention and not texting or changing the radio station, you can be sure that you and your dog are visible.  You can wear reflective or light-colored clothing and be sure to have a lighted dog collar.  This gives you a better chance of being seen and caution to be taken by the driver.

2. If your dog were to get away from you during a walk or if you have a large backyard, dog collars with a light help you to keep track of him wherever he goes.  Hopefully he is obedient to come when you call him back.

3. During an evening walk, there is the potential to come across wild animals.  Not only do lighted dog collars help you to see the animals, but hopefully scares them away before a confrontation happens.

4. The collar also eliminates the need for the owner to bother with holding a flashlight.  Having your hands free allows you to be more cognizant of your surroundings.  The collar also guarantees you always know where a flashlight is in your house if the power goes out.

5. Hopefully you and your trendy pets with lighted dog collars will be the talk of the neighborhood and encourage them to also invest in one.  More lights in the neighborhood can only be a positive thing for everyone.
