When planning family safari vacations, a lot of questions will come to mind.  Where should we go?  Is it safe?  Will my children stay interested and entertained?  Here are the answers to some of these commonly asked questions.  It is always important to research information like this before you embark on such a great adventure!

Where Should We Go?

One of the first questions that individuals will find necessary to address is, where in Africa should we go?  While there are many possible answers to this question, one choice that families often go with is South Africa.  Here, the roads are in fairly good condition, so, especially if you have small children, South Africa is an excellent destination because you can plan your own schedule with your own rental car.  Of course, it is not the only destination!  Tanzania, Kenya, and Botswana are all great options, as well, depending on the ages and interests of your family members.  It’s important to look at all your options!

Is It Safe?

Despite what you may think, on average, family safari vacations are exceptionally safe.  But remember to use your common sense!  Animals are fairly accustomed to the sight of safari vehicles driving through their habitat.  But that certainly doesn’t mean that you should stand up or get out of the vehicle at any time.  Sudden movements can, understandably, surprise the animals you will see on your safari, and you don’t want to provoke an attack!  The guides do carry guns, but this is mostly for their own protection should the tracker and the guide go off on foot to follow prints.

Will My Children Stay Interested?

Of course!  For the most part, children love animals.  Explain to them that this is an incredible opportunity—and buy them a camera!  Let them use your binoculars, and explain to them what they are seeing.  If they are younger, make sure you study all the animals that they might see before your safari departure.  And, of course, stay in a family-friendly lodge or resort.  Many even offer babysitting options if you should want to leave your children to be entertained at the lodge while the adults experience the great outdoors!
